Redemption!
One year has passed since Herb scattered lead all over the BLM educating bucks on how to survive the G-1 deer season. If you can't remember just click here. This year was a different story.
The morning started as usual with the excitement of opening morning and the petter patter of rain on the roof. We launched the boat in the dark and headed down river to the same spot as last year. The point of entry was flawless and Herb headed up the same path as last year. Steve Coffman join the party this year but Herb was the only hunter with a tag. Bert, Steve and I headed upriver looking to hook a salmon while Herb made his hunt with plans of meeting us at the same predetermined spot as last year. Unlike last year the call came about 10:30 with news that Herb made a successful stock and shot. Then the work began. Steve an I climbed the mountain and after many phone calls and whistles we finally located Herb and his buck. We rigged up a rope for the drag an off we headed back to the river. The pack was probably less than a mile but finding a safe place for the boat to make the pickup was more of a challenge. Once we reached the river we had to travel up river another 300 yards to find a save spot to load. The rest of the day was spent skinning and filleting out the back-strap for the celebration dinner. The buck was young and tender which was a great culmination of Herb's deer hunting season.
